Welcoming Tara McSweeney to Being and Becoming Counselling and Wellness Services

We are delighted to welcome Tara McSweeney, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), to the team at Being and Becoming Counselling and Wellness Services in Burnaby.

Tara brings both professional clinical experience and advanced training to her work. She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and is currently working toward her PhD in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her doctoral training builds on her clinical experience and deepens her knowledge of counselling theory, research, and therapeutic practice. She offers counselling to adults and teens, both in person in Burnaby and online across British Columbia.

A Compassionate, Inclusive Approach to Counselling

As a queer and disabled counsellor, Tara brings both professional training and personal insight to her work. She has several years of experience in crisis support, advocacy, and systems navigation, and has worked with clients navigating sexualized violence, sexuality, disability, weight stigma, identity, and marginalization. Her work recognizes that mental health and healing do not happen in isolation, and that power, stigma, and structural barriers can shape a person's experiences and wellbeing.

Tara is particularly interested in supporting neurodivergent individuals and people living with disabilities, as well as those navigating identity, self-acceptance, relationships, and emotional wellbeing. She also has a strong interest in working with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image, and appearance-related distress.

Tara's approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and grounded in feminist and anti-oppressive practice. She draws on experiential, emotion-focused, and relational therapies to help clients better understand their emotions, relationships, identities, and patterns. She recognizes that there is no single or “correct” way to heal, and works collaboratively with clients at a pace that respects their needs, autonomy, and lived experience.

Tara also supports clients through anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, life transitions, and periods of feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from themselves.

Affordable Counselling in Burnaby

Tara is part of our Affordable Counselling Program, which provides access to counselling at a reduced rate while maintaining a high standard of care. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor working toward her PhD at UBC, Tara brings professional clinical experience and advanced graduate training to her work, with sessions provided under the clinical supervision of a Licensed Psychologist.

Tara's current rates are $100 per individual session and $120 per couples session.

Whether you are navigating questions about identity and self-understanding, adjusting to life with a disability or neurodivergence, struggling with body image or disordered eating, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life, Tara aims to create a therapeutic relationship where you can feel understood, respected, and supported.

We are excited to have Tara as part of our growing team and look forward to the care she will provide to our Burnaby and BC community.
