Compassionate Mind Training (CMT)

An 8-week Experiential Course

Learn how tricky human brains can be and how susceptible they are to self-criticism and shame. This course, facilitated in a small group format, is designed to help you better understand your own brain, learn to work with it more effectively, and cultivate a more compassionate mind.

THE DETAILS:

  • Runs for 8 weeks

  • Each session is 1.5 hours long

  • This small group meets over zoom and is open to individuals located across Canada

  • Open to anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in developing a more compassionate mind

  • In an effort to make this training accessible we are offering tiered pricing

For those who experience financial barriers, are surviving, and cannot access financial support from their community.

Standard Rate

$500

For those who are financially stable, have some discretionary income, and/or have access to financial support from their community.

Generous Rate

For those who are financially thriving and have discretionary income.

Additional funds above the standard rate will be used to subsidize fees for the reduced rate.

*The fee covers the eight 2-hour group sessions, weekly summaries of the course teachings, meditations & home practices.

Learn More about Compassionate Mind Training

  • Compassionate Mind Training (CMT) is a structured 8-week course developed by Paul Gilbert, a psychologist and the creator or Compassion Focused Therapy. This program was designed specifically for individuals who exhibit high levels of shame and self-criticism, whose problems often tend to be chronic, and who find self-warmth and self-acceptance difficult or frightening. CMT focuses specifically on developing the skills of compassion.

  • CMT is an evidence-based program. It is associated with many benefits including:

    • Increased compassion for self and others

    • Improved ability to self-soothe

    • Better emotion regulation

    • Increased resilience and well-being

    • Decreased shame and self-criticism

    • Decreases in anxiety and depression

    • Decreased psychological distress

    • Decreased attachment anxiety

    • Reduced perfectionism

    • Improved relationship with one’s body

  • Each session includes a mixture of teaching, experiential practices, and group discussion. Group discussion will centre around experiences with the experiential practices and not past personal experiences.

    The experiential practices include:

    • Attention training

    • Mindfulness Practices

    • Soothing Breathing

    • Calm Place Imagery

    • Compassionate Imagery

    • Working with Body Posture

    • Recalling a Compassionate Memory

    • Loving Kindness Meditation

  • CMT is well-suited for anyone who is interested in developing a more compassionate mind.

  • No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required to attend.

  • Interested individuals must be 18 years of age or older and located within Canada to participate.

    Participants are required to have access to a stable internet connection and a computer that has both a microphone and camera. They are also required to have access to a private space from which they can participate.

  • No this is not a therapy group and it is not intended to be a substitute for medical or mental health care.

    Group discussions will be limited to discussion about the content presented in the sessions and/or experiences during the session practices.

  • The group will be limited to a maximum of 10 participants.

  • Participants are encouraged to engage with practices between sessions but this is not a requirement.

  • No. This course is not eligible for extended health benefit coverage.

Semhar is a Canadian Certified Counsellor and a Compassionate Mind Training Facilitator. She has worked in the mental health field for over a decade and has seen the power of cultivating compassion in both her own life and the lives of her clients.
