Modalities Offered for Stress and Burnout Therapy

IN-PERSON COUNSELLING AVAILABLE IN BURNABY AND ONLINE COUNSELLING AVAILABLE ACROSS BC

  • CBT is an effective treatment for burnout. It focuses on helping individuals address faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving. It also involves skills training and problem solving.

  • MBCT combines traditional cognitive therapy with mindfulness strategies. MBCT increases self-awareness, ability to effectively manage emotions and deal with unhelpful thoughts and increase resilience. MBCT teaches stress-reduction techniques and helps individuals learn to work with their thoughts more effectively.

  • IFS therapy maintains that everyone has different parts (e.g., an inner critic, a perfectionist part, a procrastinator part) as well as a Self. Some parts carry trauma or painful emotions and other parts try to protect these wounded parts. Protector parts can get stuck in extreme roles that have adverse consequences. IFS aims to heal parts from the traumas they have experienced or the burdens they carry so that the system can come into balance and the individual can be more Self-led. With your therapist's guidance, you'll build a more caring and compassionate relationship to chronically stressed-out parts and respond more effectively to whatever storms come your way.

  • Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) may be well-suited for those who are high in self-criticism. CFT emphasizes the cultivation of self-compassion and compassion for others to help counteract self-criticism and shame, and promote healing and well-being.

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that combines acceptance and mindfulness techniques with commitment and behaviour change strategies. Instead of trying to change your thoughts, ACT involves accepting the full range of your thoughts and emotions and teaches you new ways to respond to distressing thoughts and emotions. ACT also focuses on helping you identifying your personal values and committing to taking steps to incorporate changes that align with your values and lead to positive change.

FAQ about Burnout and Stress Therapy

Below are frequently asked questions about burnout and stress:

  • Stress is your body's response to external demands and pressures — it is a normal part of life and often resolves when the stressor is removed or managed. Burnout is what happens when stress accumulates over a prolonged period without adequate recovery. Unlike stress, burnout involves a deeper sense of exhaustion, emotional detachment, and loss of motivation that doesn't simply go away with rest. If you feel chronically depleted, cynical, or like you have nothing left to give, you may be experiencing burnout rather than everyday stress.

  • Burnout can show up differently for different people, but common signs include chronic physical and emotional exhaustion, difficulty concentrating or completing tasks, increasing negativity or cynicism, dreading work or responsibilities you once found meaningful, withdrawing from people and activities, physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive issues or disrupted sleep, and a persistent sense that no matter what you do it is never enough.

  • A holiday or rest can help with everyday stress and fatigue, but if you find that you come back from time off still feeling depleted, dreading returning to your responsibilities, or unable to fully switch off and recover, this is often a sign that something deeper is going on. Burnout involves patterns of thinking, relating, and responding to stress that don't resolve with rest alone. If your exhaustion is persistent, your motivation has disappeared, or you feel cynical and detached from things that used to matter to you, therapy can help you understand what is driving those patterns and make meaningful changes that support lasting recovery rather than temporary relief.

  • Burnout rarely resolves on its own without some change to the conditions or patterns that caused it. Rest can help temporarily but is usually not enough on its own, particularly if the underlying stressors remain unchanged. Therapy can help you understand what contributed to your burnout, develop more sustainable ways of relating to work and responsibilities, and make meaningful changes that support lasting recovery.

  • Recovery from burnout looks different for everyone and depends on how long you have been burned out, the severity of your symptoms, whether the underlying stressors can be reduced or changed, and the support you have around you. Some people notice meaningful improvement within a few months of therapy, while others with more severe or longstanding burnout benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will work with you to establish realistic goals and regularly assess your progress.

  • Burnout therapy is not covered by MSP in BC. However, many extended health benefit plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychologist and/or Registered Clinical Counsellor. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm whether these designations are covered under your plan and what your coverage limits are. We provide receipts at the time of payment that you can submit for reimbursement.

  • Yes — we offer burnout therapy online to anyone in British Columbia. Online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for stress and burnout and offers the added flexibility of attending sessions from wherever you are most comfortable. All virtual sessions are conducted through a secure, confidential platform.

  • This is a personal decision best made in consultation with your doctor and, if applicable, your employer. Stress leave can provide important space for recovery, particularly when symptoms are severe or when continuing to work is making things significantly worse. Therapy can support you through this decision and help you use any time off as effectively as possible for recovery rather than simply resting without addressing the underlying patterns.
